The Plastic Problem Q&A - #4

QUESTION from the audience at PBS NewsHour Presents: the Plastic Problem Panel Discussion

The documentary touched on incineration.  Are there promising (safe) trash to energy options?

ANSWER
In the US, there are three primary common combustion technologies to turn waste into energy: mass burn facilities, modular systems, and refuse derived fuel systems. They all produce some form of toxic byproduct that is regulated by the EPA and must be properly treated.
